Flea and Tick Prevention

Receive Complete Flea and Tick Prevention

Fleas affect more than just your pets. They can plague your entire home. The best way to keep your pet, home, and family pest free is to stop them before they have a chance to get in the door.

Protecting your home from fleas and ticks also means that you're protected from the diseases they carry, including tapeworms and Lyme disease.

Contact Heartland Animal Hospital of Lake Placid, FL for flea and tick prevention services you and your pet need.

Guard Your Pet Against Ticks

If your pet spends a lot of time outdoors, you may need to stay on high alert for ticks. Check your pet whenever they come back inside. If you find a tick, it's important that you properly remove it.

To remove a tick, grasp it firmly with tweezers as close as possible to your pet's skin. Be careful not to squeeze too hard. Gently pull up on the tick, making sure that you've got the whole thing, including its head.

If you notice any signs of infection or changes in your pet's behavior, be sure to bring them in to get professionally examined by our team.

Eradicate the Flea Invasion

Once fleas have infested your home, you need to kill the eggs and larvae on top of the live adults in order to completely get rid of them. It's for this reason that prevention is always easier than treatment.

One flea can lay up to 50 eggs each day. Twenty five fertile female fleas can multiply into nearly half a million offspring in just 1 month.

When checking your pet for fleas, it's not enough to simply give their fur a quick glance. Fleas are small and difficult to spot.

We recommend you pull back your pet's fur with a comb and examine their skin for tiny black dots. It's also advisable to check your carpets and your pet's bedding. Fleas love to hide in places like this. If you find any traces of an infestation, call Heartland Animal Hospital at 863-465-7387.
